COMEX or “Compagnie maritime d’expertises” is a French diving company - the NASA of the deep sea. It began to work with Rolex to develop the ultimate dive watch between 1970 to 1997. Over this period of time, Rolex produced nine COMEX variations, from the Submariner or Sea-Dweller ranges.The caseback is engraved with a number, allowing COMEX to keep a register of the watches allocated to its divers (the typography and placement of the engravings have varied over time). The serial number of the case, stamped at the lug, is also engraved on its backside (not visible).

Case: stainless steel, screw-down caseback with "COMEX 163" engraved. Case number: 2'837'885 interior inscribed with 885 and I.70. Closure: stainless steel Rolex Oyster bracelet and folding clasp. Dimensions: 40 mm diameter, bracelet circumference approx. 175 mm. Signed: case, dial and movement.

The ref. 5514 from these batches featured two different case back styles with four variations of small, medium and large issue numbers.
